Foi down to three

Of all the players Colorado has recruited in the 2010 cycle, there might not be a young man more enthusiastic and excited about visiting Boulder than Foi Foi, a defensive tackle from Hawaii. Get inside for more.

Foi Foi, a 6-foot-2, 278-pound defensive tackle from Kapolei High School in Kapolei, Hawaii said Colorado is one of his three favorites as he comes down the home stretch in recruiting. He plans to visit the Buffs in early January and could follow up with visits to Arizona and Arkansas, his other two favorites, before making a decision.

Foi said he was supposed to visit Arkansas this weekend, but the trip was postponed, setting up a busy month in January.

Longtime linebackers coach Brian Cabral serves as Foi's primary recruiting contact with the Buffs. Foi raves about his relationship with Cabral, who stopped by his high school during a recruiting trip to the islands two weeks ago.

"Some of the players on my team call me Foi Cabral Jr. now," he said.

Foi said he weighs 278 pounds and is focused on adding some weight and muscle to his frame before arriving at his future college next summer. He said Colorado is recruiting him to play defensive tackle.

"Coach Cabral came to my school like two weeks ago and said like he would really like me to play for him," he said. "Yeah, that's a big opportunity."

CU needs more depth on the defensive line, especially at tackle. Foi said the possibility of early playing time is one thing he likes about Colorado, but playing early isn't necessarily high on his list of priorities when choosing a school and football program.

"Oh, just academic-wise. The academics are really important and the football, too," he said.

Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez reported Foi has run a 5.11-second 40-yard dash, he benches 345 pounds and squats 475. He has a vertical leap of 28 inches. The one area of concern on the resume is Foi's grades. Hernandez reported a 2.2 GPA, which could cause problems in admissions at CU.

"Foi is uncommonly strong," Hernandez said. "He can manhandle opposing offensive lineman at the point of attack, and he can rush the passer."

Foi said he has never been to Colorado but he is looking forward to his trip. He said he heard a recent weather report about the state and thought it was much warmer than he anticipated for this time of year.

Foi played with several other talented players this season but said none of them are planning visits to CU. He said he believes he is the only member of his team being actively recruited by the Buffs.
