No other player on the Colorado defense has logged more playing time over the past three years then senior linebacker Brad Jones. Though there are six other seniors who figure to play a lot this season, Jones might be the best qualified to speak about the unit’s progress given all his responsibilities within it.

He has finished among the top four tacklers on the team the past two seasons from his outside linebacker spot where he is often asked to rush the passer of cover running backs or tight ends in passing situations.

How is the defense coming together after the first 10 days of training camp?

Brad Jones: “I think it’s coming together really well. We had a couple mental mistakes in the first scrimmage and people sometimes aren’t knowing exactly what to do. Other than that I think we’re coming together well and have a chance to be really, a real-deal defense this year.”

It’s you senior year, does that mean you automatically take on more of a leadership role?

Brad Jones: “I think I always try to take on a leadership role and try to guide the young guys in not making the same mistakes I did when I was young. I think I’ve always tried to do that so it’s not anything too out of the ordinary for me.

What areas have you focused your attention in terms of trying to improve as a player this year?

Brad Jones: “I’ve definitely tried to work on pass rush and just tried to watch film of pass rush. They through me into it and told me I was good at it, so I was like, ‘Might as well try to perfect what I’m doing.’ So pass rush I would definitely say has to be the biggest thing.. Basically, it’s just working on aiming for a point behind a set point and working your hands and your feet a lot. It’s pretty much on a stationary bag working on that stuff. Also I’ve been watching a lot of film and get my reads right.”

Will e used differently in the defense this year?

Brad Jones: “I think it’s going to be pretty much the same. Sometimes I’m rushing the passer, sometimes I’m a cover guy, sometimes I’m playing in the box. I think it’s just going to be a mix of stuff as far as I can tell you right now.”

Has B.J. Beatty’s improvement helped you become a better player at all?

Brad Jones: “I think I always try to push myself, but he has definitely improved. But I think I always try to push myself more just because I think it’s easier than trying to gauge yourself off somebody else.”
