Darrell Scott is headed to Boulder.
"Dan Hawkins has a vision and I want to be a part of that vision and hopefully we’ll pull in a national championship," Scott said on ESPNU this morning.
Scott was recruited by a who’s who of the top programs in the country, but took official visits to only Colorado and Texas.
The Buffs play Texas this fall, but Scott declined to predict that he'll be in the starting lineup for that game.
"I’m going to compete and try my best to get that spot, but we’ll see how it goes," he said.
Scott is ranked by Scout.com as the No. 1 running back prospect in the country this year. At 6-2, 215 pounds, Scott has sub-4.4 speed, and also employs a powerful running style. He can run around or run through defenders.
The tailback rushed for 1,697 yards and scored 23 touchdowns while helping St. Bonaventure to the California D-III state championship last season.
Scout.com recruiting analyst Brandon Huffman first saw Scott play when Scott was a freshman. Huffman says, “Scott is the kind of player who can change the momentum of a game in one play. He's got such a unique blend of speed, power and vision that is what separates him from all the other running backs. He sees the hole, he hits the hole and he's gone. No matter the angle, he's tough to bring down.
“He's also a gamer. I was at the St. Bonaventure-Oaks Christian game, a much needed win for the Seraphs, and with Oaks charging back to get within a touchdown, Scott chips off a back-breaking, game-clinching 52-yard run. When the Seraphs needed it most, he came up clutch. Fast forward to December and the D-III state title game, and Scott seals the win with a big touchdown run, then puts the nail in the coffin with a touchdown pass to the quarterback. He's clutch."
Scott proved that he wasn’t just a power back at the L.A. Scout Combine.
“He comes in, runs a 4.31 forty, puts on his sweats and leaves,” Huffman said. “Then you watch him in a game, and see its football speed. Fast secondaries couldn't catch him.”
As a true freshman, Scott is expected to compete for a starting spot in the CU backfield. He’ll be playing alongside his uncle, Josh Smith, a rising sophomore wide receiver in the CU offense.
