Inside, notes from CU football following Wednesday's practice.

• Walk-on Cody Crawford was awarded a scholarship for the season. The junior played in 12 games, starting three last season. He also saw action Saturday vs. Colorado State.

• Many CU players are walking around campus this week toting gallon jugs filled with Gatorade. They’ve been encouraged by CU trainers to drink a gallon of the stuff per day in order to hydrate fully prior to Saturday night’s game at Arizona State.

• Senior tackle Tyler Polumbus will once again take the offensive captain duties in Saturday’s game as Bernard Jackson is still ineligible. No official word on whether Jackson will return for his fifth and final season at CU.

Polumbus is a two-year starter at tackle, but he’s playing alongside two new faces — redshirt freshman Wes Palazzi and sophomore Devin Head. Daniel Sanders is playing center for the first time. Edwin Harrison, who led the team with eight pancake blocks vs. CSU, anchors the other tackle.

Polumbus said he wasn’t surprised the offensive line has gelled as well as it appears to have done this early in the season. Those five players got a majority of the reps in spring ball because there were only six healthy o-linemen participating.

• Tailback Hugh Charles did not practice Wednesday and is doubtful for the Arizona State game.

• Some good news: Freshman receiver Josh Smith had positive results from an MRI. “He’s right on track,” Hawkins said. “Hopefully, we’ll get him back, get him going and get something out of him next week. But everything looks good.”

• Hawkins said the team had a good practice Wednesday. “I thought it was really good. It’s that kind of thing where winning begets winning. You get a little wind underneath your sails, you start feeling it and you start running around a little bit.”

• While Colorado held a couple of night-time practices this August, Arizona State practices primarily in the night hours to avoid the scorching heat.

• Sophomore Michael Sipili will have a court date Thursday for his alleged involvement in an off-campus altercation in August. There’s a chance, Hawkins said, pending the outcome of the court proceeding, Sipili could be available for the ASU game.
