Berard Talks CU Visit

Josh Berard/ElCo

Linebacker prospect Josh Berard verbally commited to Colorado in early May. Berard was in Boulder this past weekend to check out the University of Colorado. Inside, read what he had to say about the visit.

"It was a nice little unofficial just to see what campus life is like and to talk to the coaches, and to see what the weather was like, too," Josh Berard said. "My impressions before I went there was it was a really nice place. And when I got there, everything was just the way everyone said. It was really nice.

"But it was really different (than southern California) even when it came to the air. I was like, ‘Man, this is some really fresh air.'"

The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder going into his second year at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., got a chance to spend some quality time with the CU coaches, in particular, defensive coordinator Ron Collins. Berard also said he got some instruction on academic requirements at CU so that he would take the correct classes at ElCo this coming year that would transfer to Colorado.

"They were excited to see me," Berard said. "They were actually really nice guys. You look at the pictures and they look tough, but all the coaches have really good personalities."

Assistant coach Darian Hagan has been recruiting Berard. He recruited Berard out of Redondo Union previously, but Berard was a tweener coming out of the SoCal high school. He's grown into good outside linebacker size, and that's where the Buffs want him to play, beginning in 2008.

"At ElCo I actually had a standout year as a freshman and I had all the traits of a linebacker," Berard said.

At ElCo he plays defensive end, but drops back into pass coverage some. He runs a consistent 4.6 40-yard dash and likes to rush the passer, he said.

Berard said since he verbally committed to Colorado in early May other schools have picked up their recruitment of him, especially Oregon State. But Berard said he's solid with the Buffs.

Berard is teammates at ElCo with another CU verbal commit, receiver Corey Surrency. Asked what kind of player Surrency is, Berard said, "He's a team player. He's not one to give up and he'll always have your back. Not only is he a playmaker, but he'll bring a lot of personality, too."
