Buffs Land Nation's No. 12 Receiver

Posted Dec 4, 2006

Colorado took a big step towards returning to big-time football this past week with a commitment from the No.12 wide receiver in the nation, Markques Simas. The San Diego receiver believes he can start at CU as a Freshman and he definitely has the talent to make a strong case for that position. Inside, he tells us why he committed to CU and how he believes the Buffs are on their way back.

CU landed another blue chip in their class this past week with the commitment of Markques Simas. The receiver visited for the Kansas State game and loved his trip. He took three other visits but none of them compared to the feeling he got when on the Boulder campus. "It was a real change from San Diego," Simas explained. "It was a smaller town feel which I liked. I still have the big city close by which is great, but I loved the college town feel of Boulder."

Simas, who accounted for around 50 catches, 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior, thinks he can make an immediate impact as a Freshman. "I think I can probably start there pretty soon. I saw their receivers and think that I have a lot to offer. I believe that I am big-time and when I saw them (Colorado) play in-person, I felt that they were only a couple playmakers away from a good team."

The receiver was recruited by CU Tight Ends Coach Kent Riddle and Receivers Coach Eric Kiesau. "I committed because I got tired of recruiting and knew that was where I wanted to be. I am going to cancel my trip to Washington State," Simas said, who has already visited Arizona State, Oregon and San Diego State.

The No.2 wideout in California had great stats this fall despite not playing with his squad in the playoffs. "I tore a ligament in my thumb and had to miss the playoffs. I have had a cast on for three weeks and will get it off in another three weeks."

Simas previously told the Buffalo Sports News that he was very impressed with the recruiting class Colorado was putting together and also points to that as a reason for the commitment. "They are getting Gates (Patrick Gates), they have Sumler there and that offensive tackle (Ryan Miller). They have some players that I am excited to play with."

The superstar received a call from Demetrius Sumler the day he committed to the coaching staff but missed the call. "Him and I will talk real soon and talk about what we are going to do up there. I need to call him back."

Simas has not yet scheduled an in-home visit with the CU staff. "We are working on the date for that right now and I expect it to happen soon."

The SoCal receiver says his grades are fine. He carries right around a 3.3 core GPA and professes to already have a passing test score.

The future Buff wants to major in Education or Business.
