CU Pro Timing Day

Matt McChesney

Colorado hosted its annual pro timing day on campus Thursday. Five players who were seniors last season, as well as two former Buffs, ran through various tests in front of a dozen or so NFL scouts at Balch Fieldhouse and at the practice fields.

Just two Buffs, Bobby Purify and Sam Wilder, were invited to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in February. Teammates Brandon Dabdoub, Matt McChesney and Ron Monteilh joined Purify and Wilder at today's workout. Also running through some tests were former CU players Marcus Moore and Clyde Surrell. Some other former Buffs, Victor Rogers and Daniel Graham, were on hand to watch the CU draft hopefuls go through the tests.

If players were tested in the 225-bench-press, it was done in the weightroom of the Dal Ward Center, where they were weighed and measured. The group gathered in Balch Fieldhouse and were tested in the Vertical Leap, Standing Broad Jump, 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, and a cone drill. Later, they went to the practice field for more testing and to get a look at how the offensive skill position players caught the ball.

(Note: the following heights, weights and vertical leaps are official. The 40 times were from my stopwatch, but times were within range of what the NFL scouts were coming up with on their watches. I did not get broad jump or shuttle times. Surrell and Moore only participated in the 40, from what I saw.)

Brandon Dabdoub
Though he didn't blow anyone away, Dabdoub moved well today. He's among the top 35 defensive tackle draft prospects, according to Scout.com. Here are his measurables from today's workout:
Ht: 6-3
Wt: 283 pounds
Vertical: 28.5/29.5
40: 5.06/5.09

Matt McChesney
McChesney was snubbed by the Combine, the Buffalo some thought should have earned an invite but didn't. He's been using the slight as motivation, and, reportedly, as of late he has been running faster than any defensive tackle was timed at the combine. Four DTs ran under 5 seconds in Indy. Thursday, McChesney didn't break the 5-second barrier, a bit of a disappointment. But he's carrying a solid-looking 307 pounds these days. One team asked him to take the Wonderlic, the standardized intelligence test taken by players at the combine.
Ht: 6-3
Wt: 307
Vertical: 27.5/27.5
40: 5.06/5.00

Ron Monteilh
Monteilh showed his athleticism today, but he's still considered a longshot to get a look in an NFL camp.
Ht: 5-11
Wt: 194
Vertical: 34.5
40: 4.62/4.57

Bobby Purify
Scout.com ranks Purify just outside the top 20 running backs in the upcoming draft. One scout at today's workout said Purify "will play in the NFL." Purify was hoping to better his numbers from Indianapolis, and did so in the Vertical Leap (33.5 at combine) and 40-yard dash (4.74/4.78 at combine).
Ht: 6-0
Wt: 212
Vertical: 35/35.5
40: 4.62/4.68

Sam Wilder
Wilder is ranked among the top 30 offensive tackle prospects by Scout.com. He ran a reported 5.38 40 at the combine, and bettered that time Thursday.
Ht: 6-4
Wt: 303
Vertical: 26/27
40: 5.32/5.25

Marcus Moore
40: 4.59/4.50

Clyde Surrell
40: 4.56/4.62
