Sutton Back on Colorado's Radar? (free content)

Posted Dec 10, 2004

David Sutton will be taking a visit to UTEP this weekend and recently picked up an offer from the Miners. He could also go to Oregon State or Michigan State if he wanted to. But it seems the main school competing with UTEP is Colorado and he plans on calling the coaches today. You would be hard pressed to find a player the same size with more speed than Sutton with his 6-7, 235 pound frame.

Height: 6-7
Weight: 235
40 time: 4.55
Bench: 325
Squat: 365
Vertical:'41
From: Compton, California
Junior College: Compton

Scout.com did not see a player with the same size that was anywhere near as fast as Sutton at the summer combines. He ran the fastest time at the Los Angeles MSL Combine and there were a few high division one prospects in attendance. Colorado is a school he was in heavy contact with in the past. "I had lost contact with Colorado because after one game when I came back to my locker room someone had stolen my gym bag and my phone was in it. So I had Coach Simms' number in there and haven't spoken with him since. I have been so busy I have not even thought about calling them. But, I am going to today."

This also being the day that Sutton will take a weekend trip to UTEP. "I was looking into their program and they throw the ball 60 times a game. Carson Palmer's brother, Jordan, is the quarterback there and I hear he is real good. UTEP is the main school I am looking at. I could go to Oregon State still, but I talk to people up there that don't like it so much.

"They also didn't have the season I expected them to. Utah State is no longer an option since their coaching staff was fired. I still kind of like Michigan State and also Central Michigan. I could go to either of those schools."

Sutton does admit that if CU came through with an offer it would be tough to pass up. "I would probably go there."

He finished the year with 425 yards receiving and five touchdowns at Compton. "I didn't really even come on until the end of the year. I was real distracted at first because after the season started my best friend was shot and killed and my grandmother also died. I was real close with her."

The Compton product is originally from Long Beach Poly. He is a lean 6-7, 235 and easily has the frame to fill out into a tight end. "I would be okay with that if a school wanted to turn me into an end."

But at the same time, he has so much speed for a receiver his size that he could create a huge advantage for an offense. He could be a major weapon in the red zone.

The Buffalo Sports News will catch up with Sutton soon to see if anything comes of his phone call to the Colorado coaches.
