The rematch did not live up to its hype, as Colorado controlled Arizona from the start en route to a 71-58 home win on Thursday night.
Brandon Ashley started the game with a jumper, but Xavier Johnson hit a three shortly after. Mark Lyons then found Kaleb Tarczewski to put Arizona up 4-3 with just under 16 minutes left in the first half. Xavier Johnson scored out of a timeout to give the Buffs the lead before Angelo Chol was able to dunk it in to get that lead back. Spencer Dinwiddie proceeded to make two free-throws, but Chol scored with a spin move again to give Arizona the 8-7 lead.
Askia Booker scored the next time down court and Andre Roberson scored off an offensive rebound to put the Buffs up three with a little more than 13 minutes left in the first half. Xavier Talton got to the line and made one of two free-throws before Kevin Parrom scored on an offensive rebound. Xavier Johnson scored off a rebound the next time down court, but Lyons hit a three and scored off a turnover to give the Wildcats a 15-14 lead with 10:44 left.
A layup by Nick Johnson extended the lead to three, but Colorado got consecutive baskets by Josh Scott and Xavier Johnson to grab the 18-17 lead with 8:33 left. Chol got the lead back, but Scott was able to match him. After a free-throw by Hill, Xavier Johnson hit a three. Lyons proceeded to make a free-throw, but Booker made a three as well and the Buffs went up 26-21 with about four minutes left.
Shane Harris-Tunks scored to increase the lead to seven before Hill made a jumper to end a six minute scoring drought. Roberson got it back with a dunk and Colorado went into the half up 30-23.
Colorado started the half with three free-throws from Dinwiddie to go up ten a minute into the second half. A layup by Xavier Johnson extended the lead before a Roberson three-pointer gave the Buffs a 15-point lead and forced another Sean Miller timeout. Lyons came up with a three-pointer shortly after and Johnson hit one of his own to cut the Colorado lead to nine with 16:09 left.
Dinwiddie made a three coming out of a timeout and Booker hit a jumper to put the lead right back at 14. Grant Jerrett made two of three free-throws to cut the lead to 12 before Lyons made a layup down the middle of the lane. After two free-throws by Colorado, Ashley made one of two and CU led 45-34 with 12:24 left.
Johnson got to the basket for the Wildcats and Jerrett proceeded to hit a three to force timeout for Colorado with Arizona cutting the lead to six with 10:53 left. However, Talton hit a three-pointer and Dinwiddie followed with a layup to put the Buffs back up 50-39 and thena three-pointer put the game back at 14.
After a dunk by Hill, Xavier Johnson hit a free-throw and Talton scored on a run out to put the Buffs up 56-41 with a little under eight minutes left. A layup by Hill tried to get the UA going and then nailed a jumper in the lane to bring Arizona within 11. However, a shot by Scott put the lead back at 13 before Johnson’s two free-throws got it back.
Tarczewski made two free-throws to put Arizona within single digits, but Dinwiddie got to the line and made both. Parrom scored the next time down court, but Xavier Johnson once again had an answer for Colorado. A basket by Tarczewski put the score at 63-53 with four minutes to go in the second half.
Colorado proceeded to score consecutive baskets to go up 15 and basically seal the game with about two minutes left.
