The Concord (Calif.) De La Salle linebacker, Victor Egu, picks hometown Cal...

Concord (Calif.) De La Salle linebacker Victor Egu won't have to go too far for college.

The three-star linebacker is staying in the East Bay, committing to California on Wednesday.

"With Cal, its a place that I know the coaches can really develop me as a football player and it's a place with a good education and a place that feels like home to me," said Egu. "I know they're down right now, but they're going to be back up."

Egu had started to trim his list in recent weeks, getting down to about three schools, but Cal kept coming out on top.

"I narrowed down my list to the schools that fit me the best and how they plan on developing me," said Egu. "I was looking at which position they wanted me to play and Cal was just the best fit for me."

With the Spartans aiming for their fourth CIF State Open Division title, and 20th straight CIF-North Coast Section title, Egu was ready to take the focus off recruiting and on the Spartans' playoff run.

"It feels real good having to get it out of the way," said Egu. "Plus I know it's the best decision for me. Egu will play linebacker for the Bears, and he gave linebackers coach Kenwick Thompson the news. "I called Coach Thompson and told him I was committing and he was excited," said Egu. Cal signed his good friend and former teammate Michael Barton last year, and Egu is excited to reunite with him and is hoping a couple other Spartan teammates join him.

"I know Mike is going there and that he can help me a lot," said Egu. "And I'd love for Austin Hooper to come with me too and we want to get D.J. Moffitt to come too. It would be a great time to play together, but of course it depends on where they all want to go."

Egu said his family was thrilled with his decision to stay local.

"My family is happy with my decision," said Egu. "They obviously wanted me to make the best decision but they're glad I picked Cal."

The Spartans have a bye this weekend, and will play the winner of Monte Vista-Pittsburg in the second round of the CIF-NCS playoffs next weekend.

This weekend, though, Egu plans to be in Berkeley when Oregon comes to town.
