Colorado football coach Jon Embree named senior Tyler Hansen his starting quarterback today, three days after concluding spring practices. Hansen will lead the Buffs in their first season in the Pac-12 Conference in 2011 and through a brutal 13 game schedule.

“Tyler did a great job all spring,” Embree said in a press release from the school. “He has command of everything you need to have at quarterback and has also developed into a team leader. This was a goal of his heading into the spring and I’m happy that he was able to attain that goal.”

It is the second consecutive season Hansen will begin the year as the starter for Colorado. He earned the job last year but wasn't officially named the starter until well into training camp in August.

Hansen played in seven games before suffering a ruptured spleen in October against Texas Tech. The injury ended his season.

Hansen has played in each of his first three seasons in Boulder. He was used as a change of pace for his running ability during the 2008 season as a true freshman. He took over the starting role in the sixth game of the 2009 season after former Buff Cody Hawkins threw one too many interceptions and he threw for 1,102 yards and six touchdowns last year before he was hurt.

This year Hansen and his teammates will go through summer workouts and fall camp knowing who the starting quarterback will be, causing one less major distraction.

“I’m excited about the challenge,” Hansen said in the same press release. “I’m looking forward to getting into more of a leadership role in the summer, getting even more familiar with the playbook, organizing the seven-on-seven sessions, and concentrating on our first and foremost goal to beat Hawai’i (CU’s season opener on Sept. 3 in Honolulu). I feel like I am playing smarter, I’m making better decisions, knowing when to throw the ball away instead of taking a sack, where to go with the ball based on coverages and knowing when to pull the ball down and run.”

Hansen completed 39 or 53 passes for 531 yards and five touchdowns and no interceptions in the three main spring scrimmages. His passer rating was 188.9.

Hirschman also performed well, particularly late in spring ball completing 22 of 43 passes for 274 yards and three scores in the three scrimmages. He also did not throw and interception.
