Hawk's conference call

Hawk's conference call

Dan Hawkins said he was surprised by the way his team performed in its first road game of the season Saturday at Cal. Hawkins addressed the performance the the Week 3 matchup with Hawaii as well as other topics during the Big 12 coaches' teleconference Monday morning.

Dan Hawkins had this to say when asked about a remark supposedly made by quarterback Tyler Hansen on Twitter assuring fans that the Buffs wouldn't play as poorly again they did against Cal the rest of the season. (FYI, I've been unable to find the specific tweet).

"I think our guys have great resolve and they're not going to cash it in," Hawkins said. "They've got a lot of pride and they've worked too hard. I don't have any doubt that they will rally back."

Hawkins was asked why his team seems to be so affected by momentum swings.

"I think we're just learning," Hawkins said. "We certainly address that. We talk to our guys about that all the time, that bad things are going to happen and you're going to have to work your way through it."

Perhaps the most interesting question put to Hawkins today was whether he believes a 52-7 loss is more damaging in Year Five of his tenure.

"I don't know. They're all not fun," he said. "We've got to learn from it, which we do and take bits and pieces out of it and look at it concretely and keep trying to mend it for this week."

The Colorado offensive line struggled badly at Cal, allowing six sacks and being ineffective in the run game. Here is how Hawkins addressed the problems there.

"Sometimes we have trouble working from a double team to another backer, a little pick up here and there," he said. "So I think we put Mike (Iltis) in there at left guard and I think he did a nice job for us in there. I think we just have to continue to work on that. We have to get ourselves in situations where it's not so, you know, where the defense can't pin their ears back and come get you on third downs. I think that puts a lot of pressure on your o-line as well."

Hawkins described this week's opponent, the Hawaii Warriors, this way.

"Offensively, they're electric," Hawkins said. "They obviously do a good job of throwing it around the yard. Their quarterback. is very fast when he takes off running. I think they have a good, hard, aggressive running game as well. They're electric. On defense they're very sound and very solid. If you get yourself in bad points either personnel-wise or down and distance, they can give you a lot of things to look at, but they are sort of an electric team."

When asked if Hawaii's Week 1 performance against USC would get his players' attention, Hawkins said it should, but it shouldn't come to that for motivation.

"Well, I would everything gets our attention," Hawkins said. "We obviously didn't play very well last week, and we've got to improve on that. We know that, yeah, Hawaii is a good football team. You can see that on tape. That's pretty easy to see. They're coming off a big win this past weekend.. So there is a lot of reasons they should want to get ready."
